Play therapy is the essential mode of treatment for children ages 3 to 10 (approximately). Children do not possess the ability to verbally articulate feelings, trauma, adjustment issues, etc. in the way that adults do. Instead, they do this through play. A Play Therapist is able to come alongside the child in a therapeutic play environment and help the child to navigate those big emotions and themes in a safe, unconditionally accepting environment. Child-Centered Play therapy is research based and proven to facilitate lasting change in the lives of children struggling with big emotions and heavy experiences. To find out more about why Play Therapy is the only way to work with young children, please visit The Association For Play Therapy's website which can be found here:
My primary approach to working with clients involves utilizing Solution Focused Brief Therapy. SFBT is a very useful approach to handling most any issue that would bring a client to a therapist. SFBT focuses on the future, and I help clients articulate and formulate what their preferred future is. Clients then work towards constructing the stepping stones that will lead them on the pathway to their preferred future with my guidance within the therapeutic relationship. The theoretical approaches I am rooted in include: Attachment, Person-Centered, Systems, Adlerian, Reality, and Cognitive Behavioral Theories. Familiarizing yourself with these on a surface level will help you to understand how I see clients and the issues that they bring to the therapeutic relationship.
A brief description of SFBT and how a therapist uses it within the therapeutic relationship can be found here:
As a believer and follower of Christ, I am in a unique position to be able to, at the request of the client, frame the therapeutic relationship in such a way that will be useful and meaningful to a client that wishes to seek therapy from a therapist who can incorporate an Evangelical Christian world-view into their work. This approach to therapy is ONLY used when clients specifically request it and otherwise will not come up at all in the therapeutic relationship. It is important for all clients to know that I am not a certified Biblical Counselor and should they want that specific type of therapist, I am unable to provide that service.
Depression, fear, and anxiety are some of the most common and uncomfortable emotions that we can experience at some point in our lives. Through counseling and treatment, clients are walked along the journey to recover motivation, perspective, and joy that they once had in their lives.
Many individuals can experience symptoms associated with painful and traumatic circumstances. Anxiety, fear, and hopelessness are a few emotions that can linger post traumatic events. We can help you overcome these symptoms and guide you through the process of grief and healing.
Although online therapy became very common place during the COVID shutdown, I am not a fan of this delivery method. I can and will provide HIPPA compliant online therapy if it is absolutely needed, as in the case where I may be ill or my client may be ill. Play therapy clients will not receive services via online therapy.
